JOB DESCRIPTION

Position:          Physical Education Teacher

Job Goal        To develop in each pupil an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievements; and to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil’s ability and Massachusetts frameworks.

Supervision:    Reports to the Dean of Academics and/or Director.

Education, Work Experience, and Licensure:

Required      A bachelor’s degree with a PE major. Must be highly qualified by the end of the 2008-2009 school year.

Preferred:        Prior work experience as a Physical Education Teacher.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing course of study adopted by the School Committee, and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Oversees personnel as designated by the Principal or the Superintendent.
  3. Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school.
  4. Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
  5. Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  6. Provides individualized and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil to the extent feasible.
  7. Makes appropriate adaptations and accommodations for all students.
  8. Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of pupils.
  9. Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.
  10. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical educations areas.
  11. Evaluates each pupil’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
  12. Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the school, and in self-selected professional growth activities.
  13. Selects and requisitions uniforms, equipment, and instructional aids.
  14. Maintains required inventory records.
  15. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
  16. Identifies pupil needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  17. Cooperates with school administration in providing specially performing groups for special occasions, meetings, assemblies, and interscholastic athletic events.
  18. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  19. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  20. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  21. Coaches at least two extracurricular athletic activities.
  22. Acts as Mandated Reporter (Chapter 119, Section 51A).
  23. Any other duties as may be assigned by Administration.

Physical Requirements:          
The position requires a frequent amount of walking, running, standing, sitting and climbing stairs whenever necessary.  Activities also include frequent physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects.  The position requires lifting objects of 40 pounds on a frequent basis, and over 40 pounds occasionally. 

Environmental Conditions:    
The occupant is required to work indoors and outdoors.  The regular chemical solvents are toners and cleaning fluids.  The use of athletic equipment is also required.
