JOB DESCRIPTION |
Position: Music Teacher |
Job Goal: To develop in each pupil an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of music; and to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music in accordance with the Massachusetts frameworks.

Supervision: Reports to the Dean of Academics and/or Director.

Education, Work Experience, and Licensure:
|
Required: A bachelor’s degree in Music.Must be highly qualified by the end of the 2008-2009 school year.
|
Preferred: Prior work experience as a Music Teacher.A master’s degree in Music.
|
Performance Responsibilities:
- Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble). Uses the course of study adopted by the School Committee and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the schools.
- Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within allotted time.
- Provides individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Uses repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
- Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
- Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.
- Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community.
- Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil’s progress.
- Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Cooperates with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and self-selected professional growth activities related to music.
- Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
- Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
- Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Acts as Mandated Reporter (Chapter 119, Section 51A).
- Complies with the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Policy.
- Any other duties as assigned by Administration

Physical Requirements:
The position requires a moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting and climbing stairs and
step stool whenever necessary. Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body
movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects. The
position requires lifting objects of 20 pounds on a frequent basis, and over 20 pounds
occasionally. There is a frequent requirement of fine manipulation associated with the required
use of a computer, typewriter, keyboard, calculator, and other business machines. The use of
musical instruments is also required.

Environmental Conditions:
The occupant is required to work indoors. The regular chemical solvents are toners and cleaning
fluids. The occupant is subjected to high noise levels associated with musical instruction. |
