JOB DESCRIPTION

Position:          Dean of Students

Job Goal        To help students resolve such nonacademic problems as may interfere with their getting the greatest benefit from the school’s educational opportunities and to help them achieve the fullest benefits from the school’s nonacademic programs, services, and offerings in accordance with Massachusetts frameworks.

Supervision   Reports to Director.  Supervises those individuals that may be assigned by the Administration.

Education, Work Experience, and Licensure:

Required:        A bachelor’s degree with a major in education.At least three years of successful teaching.

Preferred:        Prior experience as a Dean of Students or equivalent.A master’s degree with a major in education.

Performance Responsibilities:
1.    Shares with the principal the responsibility for protecting the health and welfare of students.
2.    Shares responsibility for certifying students for graduation.
3.    Oversees all matters of student attendance.
4.    Counsels individual students and, when necessary, makes appropriate referrals for testing, guidance, or psychological counseling.
5.    Makes recommendations for appropriate revisions of policies and rules affecting the student’s life in the school.
6.    Resolves all discipline problems in a fair and just manner, and maintains records of any disciplinary action taken.
7.    Assists in the supervision of the registration, classification, scheduling, and testing of students.
8.    Participates in the coordination, implementation, and supervision of co-curricular activities.
9.    Assists in the interpretation of school and district programs, policies, and procedures to students, parents, staff, and community.
10.  Works with community and government agencies on problems relating to drug abuse and truancy from school.
11.  Assists in developing and administering practices dealing with campus control and security.
12.  Assists with campus supervision.
13.  Confers with parents, teachers, counselors, support service personnel, and students on matters of academics, discipline and welfare.
14.  Confers with and makes appropriate referrals to psychologists, social workers, and other personnel.
15.  Has general supervisory responsibility for student activities, programs of student orientation, and similar activities.
16.  Assists in assigning faculty to supervision of co-curricular activities.
17.  Supervises development, maintenance, and distribution of student calendars,handbooks, schedules, bulletins, and the like.
18.  Acts as Mandated Reporter (Chapter 119, Section 51A).
19.  Complies with the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Policy.
20.  Assigns staff in non-classroom related duties.
21.  Any other duties as may be assigned by Director.

Physical Requirements:          
The position requires a moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting and climbing stairs and step stool whenever necessary.  Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects.  The position requires lifting objects of 20 pounds on a frequent basis, and over 20 pounds occasionally.  There is a frequent requirement of fine manipulation associated
with the required use of a computer, typewriter, keyboard, calculator, and other business machines.

Environmental Conditions:    
The occupant is required to work indoors.  The regular chemical solvents are toners and cleaning fluids.
