Position: Art Teacher
|
Job Goal: To develop in each pupil an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with Massachusetts frameworks; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of art.
|
Supervision: Reports to the Dean of Academics and/or Director.
|
Education, Work Experience, and Licensure:
|
Required: A bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts.Must be highly qualified by the end of 2008-2009 school year.
|
Preferred: Two years work experience as a Art Teacher. A master’s degree in Fine Arts.
|
Performance Responsibilities:
- Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art, following the course of study adopted by the School Committee, and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school.
- Provides instruction by which pupils develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
- Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling, using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids.
- Oversees personnel as designated by the Principal or the Superintendent.
- Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
- Provides individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive student environment.
- Instructs pupils in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
- Organizes storage areas and controls use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.
- Evaluates each pupil’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepares progress reports.
- Selects and requisitions books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintains required inventory records.
- Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit pupils’ work for the school and the community.
- May sponsor exhibits from outside the school.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Maintains an auditable record of pupil attendance and makes daily reports of pupils absent each period.
- Assigns citizenship and scholarship marks.
- Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school.
- Acts as Mandated Reporter (Chapter 119, Section 51A).
- Complies with the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Policy
- Any other duties as may be assigned by Administration.

Physical Requirements:
The position requires a moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting and climbing stairs and
step stool whenever necessary. Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body
movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects. The
position requires lifting objects of 20 pounds on a frequent basis, and over 20 pounds
occasionally. There is a frequent requirement of fine manipulation associated with the required
use of a computer, typewriter, keyboard, calculator, and other business machines.

Environmental Conditions:
The occupant is required to work indoors. The regular chemical solvents are toners and cleaning
fluids. In addition, the use of art supplies, such as paint, paint thinner, and other art materials is
required. The use of various art tools and equipment, such as brushes and scraping tools is
required. High fume levels may be encountered. The use of a mask, goggles, and other
appropriate safety equipment may be required. |
